  • PRACTICES OF MEMORY AND RESTITUTION: SCREENING OF MAPUCHE CINEMA AND CONVERSATION WITH FRANCISCO HUICHAQUEO AND CAMILA CARIS SEGUEL

    Active Epistemologies

    7 MAR - 7 MAR, 2026

    Saturday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m.

The workshop Active Epistemologies: Creación y Crítica concludes with a screening of Mapuche cinema by Francisco Huichaqueo (Wallmapu, Chile) and a conversation with Camila Caris Seguel (Chile/Livingston, Guatemala). Huichaqueo’s practice explores the power of cinema as a means of transmitting territory and ancestral pasts, as well as a tool for advocating the restitution of ethnographic collections to their communities of origin. Through film projections—conceived as healing breaths—cast onto ancestral ceramics and within museum spaces, his work conveys an imaginary of coexistence while articulating a critique of the dominant representation of living peoples. This practice enters into dialogue with Caris Seguel’s experiences in educational collecting and community-based exhibition-making, stemming from her work as co-founder of Museo del Mundo and currently as director of the Centro de Encuentros Culturales in Livingston.

Francisco Huichaqueo is a Mapuche artist, filmmaker, and curator, as well as a professor at the School of Visual Arts at the University of Concepción. His work is characterized by a deep connection to the Mapuche worldview, centered on the recovery, repair, and empowerment of Indigenous memory and culture. Through his artistic practice, Huichaqueo seeks to challenge colonial narratives, promote cultural resistance, and strengthen the bond with land and ancestors.

Camila Caris Seguel (1989, Santiago, Chile) is an art historian from the University of Chile, with studies in museology and curatorship, and has been based in Livingston, Guatemala, since 2016. She has worked on the documentation, research, education, and circulation of popular art collections in institutions such as the Museo de Arte Popular Americano MAPA (2012–2016), Museo del Mundo (2016–2025), and currently serves as Director of the Centro de Encuentros Culturales. In addition, Camila has participated as an editor, producer, and curator in projects related to artistic and feminist practices in Central America and the Caribbean, including Haitian Art in Chile (2023–2025), Niñas Furia: Women Artists in Guatemala (2023–2024), and The Garífuna Nation in Central America and the Caribbean (2021–2024).
