  • RESIDENCY OPEN CALL: STUDIOS AT MASS MOCA

    La Nueva Fábrica and the Studios at MASS MoCA are thrilled to announce a new residency opportunity for a Guatemalan visual artist based in Guatemala to undertake a fully-funded one-month residency at the Studios at MASS MoCA in 2026 and subsequently present an exhibition at íNTIMO,  La Nueva Fábrica’s project space.

    BENEFITS INCLUDE

    • Private, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA, available 24/7
    • Housing (private bedroom with queen bed, shared kitchen, and bath) in apartments directly across the street from the museum
    • One communal meal per day in the company of fellow artists-in-residence
    • An optional studio visit with a MASS MoCA curator or a guest curator and other opportunities to share work
    • The opportunity to connect with international creative peers
    • 1-year access to financial and business workshops through MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists program, helping artists in all disciplines strengthen the business side of their artistic practice (with advice available on taxes, grant writing, project budgeting, etc.).
    • Translator (English <> Spanish) accompaniment for resident during key events if needed
    • USD 1200 Stipend for travel and living costs 
    • A production budget of USD 500 to produce an exhibition at íNTIMO, La Nueva Fábrica’s project space, upon the artist’s return to Guatemala
    • Support with visa logistics. While La Nueva Fábrica cannot guarantee visas for entry to the United States, we are committed to helping the artist secure a visa appointment and prepare the necessary documents.

    The residency is granted to one artist at a time.

    The resident will be given the opportunity to choose one of the following dates:

    January 15 – February 10, 2026

    May 7 – June 2, 2026

    June 4 – June 30, 2026

    August 27 – September 22, 2026

    November 19 – December 15, 2026

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Applicants must be visual artists with Guatemalan citizenship currently living in Guatemala
    • 18 years or older
    • Basic English is helpful, but not required
    • An art degree and/or formal training are not required to apply
    • To qualify, individuals must demonstrate commitment to their process and an interest in connecting with the communities of The Studios at MASS MoCA and La Nueva Fábrica. We welcome applications from artists at all career stages, income levels, and disciplines (painters, sculptors, installation artists, fiber artists, printmakers, performance artists, sound artists, photographers, video artists) whose practice allows them to work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed, so power tools and loud music are discouraged)

    All applicants must submit:

    • Portfolio with CV

    Applications must be emailed as one single PDF, with a file size that is no larger than 20MB, titled LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_MASS_2026. Please use the email subject line “MASS MoCA 2026” and send to residencia@lanuevafabrica.org

    The deadline for application is January 31, 2025 at 6 p.m. Guatemala time.

    Due to the high volume of applications, please note that only the first 60 applications will be reviewed.

    Incomplete or incorrectly formatted applications will not be considered. Only digital materials will be accepted.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    The selection committee will be comprised of Kency Cornejo (Associate Professor of Contemporary Latin American and Latinx Art at the University of New Mexico); Carolina Porras Monroy (Manager, Studios at MASS MoCA), and Ilaria Conti (Executive Director and Chief Curator, La Nueva Fábrica).

    PRIVACY

    We take applicants’ privacy seriously. Applications will be shared with the selection committee solely for the purpose of admission.

    COVID-19 RESPONSE

    The Studios at MASS MoCA require proof of a negative COVID test result within 72-hours before arrival (rapid at-home test is sufficient.) MASS MoCA does not have a mask mandate at this time. Any artist whose residency has to be canceled for COVID-19 reasons will have their residency honored and rescheduled at a later date.

    ABOUT THE STUDIOS AT MASS MOCA

    The Studios is MASS MoCA’s artist and writers residency program situated within the museum’s factory campus and surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Operated by MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists department, the residency runs year-round and hosts up to 10 artists at a time. Since 2015, The Studios at MASS MoCA has hosted 900 artists and writers at one of the world’s leading art centers.
