    Eliazar Ortiz

    25 APR - 25 APR, 2026

    Saturday, April 25, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Through a botanical workshop led by Dominican artist Eliazar Ortiz, we will activate local material memory through the use of natural dyes in artistic creation.

Starting with the identification of dye plants found in the Antigua Guatemala market, the milpas of Santa María de Jesús, and the natural surroundings of Volcán de Agua, we will create colors using a range of extraction techniques: rubbing petals and seeds onto paper, dyeing cotton threads, and making homemade lake pigments.

As we learn these dyeing processes, we will also share reflections on the history and impact of contemporary agriculture on our ecosystems, and on the role of dye plants across different moments of regional production. This will open up questions around the sustainability of Indigenous dyeing technologies in the present.
