Join us for She Flickered In and Out of History by Elisa Giardina Papa, a video installation tracing the story of a volcanic island that rose between Tunisia and Sicily in 1831, ignited a sovereignty dispute, and disappeared beneath the Mediterranean Sea five months later.

Filmed on Mount Etna, Stromboli, and the submerged slopes of Mediterranean volcanic islands, the work leaves historical actors outside the frame, allowing geological forces and fluid matter to become the protagonists. Recipient of the 2024 Italian Council International Commissions award, it is part of a trilogy of video installations exploring forgotten Mediterranean histories that unsettle established ideas of borders, sovereignty, and belonging across time.

Project realized with the support of the Italian Council Program (2024), promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, and produced in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO).
