Templo de Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana, Santa Ana Square, Antigua, Guatemala
Community celebration: Saturday, December 13 at 5 p.m. (La Nueva Fábrica’s Garden)
To mark the 450th anniversary of the Templo de Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana, named after the historic aldea in which La Nueva Fábrica is located, artist Sheila Hicks presents a new outdoor installation that honors the many thousands who have passed through this sacred site.
Her artwork, titled Peregrinación, rises from the ground in the form of massive poles wrapped in vivid fibers and textiles. They lean against the church’s tall bell tower as if set down by travelers arriving after a long journey. Hicks imagined each pole as a baton carried by a pilgrim who pauses at Santa Ana to rest, pray, or simply breathe before moving forward again. The installation invites visitors to stand in that same space of pause and reflection, to sense the presence of those who came before them, and to feel the quiet strength that gathers around the church.
For more than a decade, Hicks has worked with the textile community of the aldea of Santa Ana through the Mitchell Denburg Collection, particularly with JD Textiles, the workshop that produces the collection’s textiles and has helped sustain the work and vision of La Nueva Fábrica from the beginning. This installation stands as an acknowledgment of that partnership. It is a tribute to the weavers of Santa Ana, to their creative spirit, and to the cultural heritage that continues to define the life of the community.
