  • STAGING: CONTINUITIES AND RUPTURES OF INDIGENISMO IN THE HISTORY OF GUATEMALAN ART. A CONVERSATION WITH ANDREA GARCíA RODRíGUEZ AND SEBASTIáN EDUARDO DáVILA

    Active Epistemologies

    1 MAR - 1 MAR, 2026

    Friday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m.

Centro Cultural de España, Guatemala City

As part of the workshop Active Epistemologies: Creación y Crítica, the conversation explores continuities and ruptures in the history of Guatemalan art throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, with an emphasis on the indigenista gaze and its critique. Through scenographic architecture, muralism, and dance, this period revealed a drive to integrate space into artistic practices as a way of reflecting on and staging an ostensibly national heritage, crystallized in the everyday and the present.

The indigenista gaze has served both as a point of reference and as a site of contestation and critique in reflections on Guatemalan art in dialogue with the region. Which artistic practices have registered these shifts in perspective? What concepts have been employed? How have these histories been articulated, and what are their limits? This conversation addresses these questions by bringing into dialogue artistic practices from different moments across the region.
